W7 Form – IRS Website by Downloading Form W 7 – Noncitizens who are not eligible for a Social Security number but who are required to file a federal tax return with the Internal Revenue Service for income derived from sources in the United States can apply for an individual taxpayer identification number, also known as an ITIN, by completing a W7 Form and submitting it to the Internal Revenue Service.
The Internal Revenue Service, often known as the IRS, requires taxpayers typically in the United States to provide their Social Security numbers to identify themselves and their family members. Noncitizens who owe taxes in the United States, on the other hand, may not be eligible to get a Social Security number. Instead, individuals may file W7 Form to the Internal Revenue Service to get an individual taxpayer identification number, often known as an ITIN.
ITIN, or individual taxpayer identification number, is something that the majority of people have heard of but have never required to use in order to file a tax return in the United States of America. Nevertheless, what many people are not aware of is the massive amount of documentation that must be completed in order to get this unique identification number.
- ITIN and W7 Form are intertwined. In actuality, W7 Form is the document that must be submitted to get an ITIN. The following information is requested on the W7 Form:Your name, postal address, and, if applicable, a foreign address are required.
- In addition to your birthdate, you should provide the city and state where you were born.
- Your country of origin is indicated by an asterisk.
- If you have a foreign tax identification number, please provide it.
- Please submit documentation proving that you have a visa to enter the United States.
- Other information that helps to verify your identity
- To supplement the information on W7 Form, you will also need two of the following papers that have not expired, or certified copies of the documents, to show proof of your identity:
- A current passport
- Photo identification from US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
- Visas were granted by the Department of State of the United States.
- A valid driver’s license issued in the United States
- A military identification card from the United States
- An international driver’s license
- Foreign military personnel identification card
- A national identification card with the bearer’s name, address, photograph, date of birth, and expiry date.
- A United States state-issued identification card
- Noncitizen voter registration card
- A certified copy of the civil birth certificate
- Medical records (for a dependent under the age of six) are kept on file.
- School records are essential (for a dependent student under the age of 18).
Unless you have a dependant under the age of majority, at least one of the two papers must have a photograph. Your foreign status, identity, or both may be established via the use of particular papers. If you have a valid passport in your possession and are not a dependant, you may not be required to get a second document.

What is the need for ITINs?
People who are legally licensed to work in the United States are sometimes the only ones who are qualified to get a Social Security number in the United States. This covers both citizens of the United States and noncitizens, such as nationals of the United States and permanent residents. These individuals use their Social Security numbers to identify themselves when they file their tax returns with the IRS.
However, noncitizens without a work permit may be required to file tax returns in the United States in some circumstances, such as if they receive income from sources in the United States or are entitled to a refund of withheld money under a tax treaty.
Aside from that, taxpayers who claim noncitizen partners or dependents on their tax returns must furnish their identification numbers for them. These are the kind of scenarios in which individual taxpayer-identification numbers come into play, as previously stated.
By Completing and Submitting the Form
A tax return that is accompanied by one or more W7 Form is ineligible for electronic submission. Alternatively, you may submit it in person at any IRS Taxpayer Assistance Facility that provides in-person document evaluations; such facilities can be found in most large cities, and there is at least one centre in every state.
